March
4 Plano, Texas
The
2000 ASA Amateur Circuit kicked off the season March 4th
at the famous Eisenbergs Skatepark in Plano, TX. A strong
showing of the Dallas local street skaters was present,
but sixteen year old Missouri, TX native Chris Fleener took
the Expert Men's street title while Deborah West, the ever
progressing Plano local, took the women's street crown.
Chris Fleener demonstrated his diverse street skating ability
by pulling off a 180 acid drop from the eleven-foot vert
ramp coping into the street course below. Deborah put on
a show with sick moves that impressed even the best male
skaters like a ten-foot gap transfer from the hipped quarter
bowl into the eight-foot mini. Deborah placed fifth overall
out of a field of 20 skaters. Eighteen of those were men.
The locals benefited from knowing the lay of the course.
It is obvious that the progression of the sport and scene
as a whole is stronger than ever. These superstars of tomorrow
are riding and competing with no sponsors. They skate, simply
for the love of skating. Even the youngsters came out and
impressed the judges and ASA staff that
was present at the event. Look out for up and comer C.B.
Bonz from Houston. This ten-year-old is definitely the future
of the sport and is already turning heads of industry leaders.
Not to be outdone was 45 year old Ron Leck who tore up both
the open street and vert categories, taking the Silver medal
position on the vert podium.
