The ASA
amateur circuit comes to Nashville, TN or Cashville TN,
what the locals like to call it, once again in 2000. This
sectional event held at XXXSports a well-known and established
sports park and pro shop was part of the 52-event search
for the top skaters to make it to World championships through
their respective regional competitions. Here in Nashville,
TN the country music city of the world we don't just have
lots of country music singers we also have tons of talented
skaters who have recently appeared in BOX and Daily Bread
magazines. Skaters like Lee Strader, Zack Johnson, Garrot
Slobey, Chris Weygandt and a few others who have all had
shots in the zines. These guys and a ton more came out to
show their stuff and try to qualify for the regional event
in Plano TX.
The day
started out cloudless and beautiful but as it progressed
it turned out to be one of the hottest days yet in Nashville
reaching a temperature of 91 degrees with thick humidity.
The skaters didn't seem to mind too much though as they
kept flowing in that morning to register. Six kids for the
12 and under class came out to compete in this contest.
These six possible future pros went out and skated with
speed, agility, and bravery as they ripped the course up
with their maneuvers. Pulling tricks like frontsides, souls,
sweatstances, and big spins like 180s and 360s as well.
The one skater that put all his tricks together and skated
with smooth style was Rory Michaels out of Clarksville,
TN taking home first place and a ton of prizes. In the open
division there were six skaters that competed in this class
looking to take home the goods. These guys were killer as
they tore up the course pulling switch-ups, mad spins and
really giving it there all. Seventeen year old Jake Wiens
out of Hendersonville, TN ripped up the street course skating
wicked fast and linking tricks back to back enough to pull
ahead of the rest to win it all.
To finish
off the day were the expert skaters. These seventeen inline
extremists really had their challenge competing for ten
spots to qualify for the regional competition at Eisenbergs
skatepark. This elite bunch of skaters fired up the course
with spectacular runs. Pulling tricks like frontside torques,
royales up rails and 540 wall rides. A few highlights were
Chris Weygandt's true spin souls, Scott Carter's 540 wall
ride, and thirteen-year old Josh Whitfield's 900 attempt.
The one skater with the most creative and linked run took
home the gold. Tri Rudolf out of Cincinnati, Ohio pulled
switch-ups so crazy and fast I couldnąt name them. To finish
off the hot, muggy day we had a water-balloon fight to cool
everyone down.
