6 Salem, OR
I was stoked on the opportunity to travel to the different
parks and see the new talent when I took on the role of
West Coast Regional Director for the ASA Amateur Circuit.
I was excited about going to Salem just to see the Skate
Barn team skaters represent, and they did. Mike Baker was
nice enough to be my personal taxi and picked me up from
the airport and let me stay at his house for a whole three
hours of sleep, then drove me to the YMCA Extreme Sports
Center at 7 am. Registration was pretty dull with only 20
something competitors, ten of which were skateboarders.
In the expert street comp there were many familiar faces,
one being Chris Baker who took a solid and consistent 7th.
As a side note, Chris has the largest fingerboard course
set up on his dad's pool table. The true skaters were there
having fun including the lil' man Buck Smith, who was shocked
as his name was announced in second place. Travis Steenslid
stayed clean to take first. The vert comp was a pretty standard
westcoast am event with very few competitors and none that
were true vert skaters. Chris baker took an easy first place
with his smooth "mighty mouse" style.
