June
17 Simi Valley, CA
On a hazy Saturday
morning, I made my way into the mountains and foothills of
Simi Valley, CA, getting an early start to the ASA Amateur
event at the Skatelab. As I pulled into the parking lot at
7:30 am, there was already a line of 25 eager skaters waiting
for the doors to open at 9:00 am. I met with the very helpful
Skatelab staff and prepared the course for the contest with
the Salomon and L2 banners as well as the ASAskate.com, your
source for in-line news.
As I made
my way to open registration a bit early at 8:45, the line
had grown to 50 skaters. By the time the line was gone,
it was only 9:45 and there were 68 skaters already registered.
I attempted to close registration, but as the 11:00 hour
approached another huge influx of skaters from as far away
as Phoenix, Santa Rosa and San Francisco made their way
through the doors. After all was said and done, we had hit
the triple digits for the first time in 2000. With over
100 skaters waiting to compete, we started behind schedule
but kept on cranking through the day to accommodate all
the eager skaters and parents that made the journey to see
their son or daughter skate. We started off the expert street
prelims with amazing skating that impressed everyone who
was surrounding the street course. It was obvious which
skaters would be the top performers on the day.
As the
field of 40 expert street skaters was slowly dwindled away,
we prepared the 12 & under class for their chance at stardom.
Many of these skaters possessed the ability of many in the
expert class from previous contests. Little kids going bigger
than I have seen in recent years without fear or regard
for their bodies. They kept charging forward to be one of
the few that advances into the finals. After the smoke had
cleared from the little wheels burning up the ramps, the
Carroll brothers Jeremy and Robert took 1st and 3rd respectively,
and Ricky Rodriguez flipped into 2nd.
The open
class was nothing short of spectacular as well. Mike Stockdill
linked together an amazing run to take 1st, while Robert
Arsenault just missed the glory falling into 2nd just 1
point behind. And in third place, Aarin Gates, the only
female in the open class of 18 skaters showed why she deserves
to be in the top 3. The expert finals rounded out the middle
of the street contest with local boy Michael Fox putting
together one of the cleanest runs I have witnessed in some
time. Valley local Shea Lewis also with very technical tricks
slid into 2nd and the high flying, balls to the wall dare
devil Rachard Johnson rolled away with 3rd.
Although
the mini ramp fields were small, the competition was top
notch. The 12 & under field represented a new breed of talent
with Derek Nowe in 1st, Ricky Rodriguez pulling a sweep
for second and Spencer Sellers coming in 3rd. The open field
had only 3 skaters, but the consistency showed. Robert Arsenault
vaulted into 1st while female Aarin Gates took 2nd and Cody
Weber from Redondo Beach took 3rd. The expert class ripped
up the 6-foot mini with skills and tricks that impressed
everyone. Little man Erik Perkett struts into 1st with Jake
Taylor in second and Griffey Merch taking third. Las Vegas
knows how to represent! A big thanks to all that stayed
for the entire event and for being so patient. This event
was the largest to date with over 100 skaters that competed.
Congratulations to all the winners and thank you for supporting
the ASA Amateur Circuit.
