Allentown Amateur Sectional

The Allentown Sportsfest was the backdrop for the last sectional qualifier event in the Mid Atlantic Region of the 2000 ASA Amateur Circuit. The Extreme Zone Games were a new attraction to the festival, which celebrated it's 4th year in 2000. There was an in-line contest along with skateboarding and bmx demonstrations and contests over the 2 day festival on July 8 and 9. The street course and mini ramp was brought in from New Jersey, and at first look was very small, but allowed for some creative lines and careful planning by each skater for their runs. We had a small turn out for the 12 & under and open class on Saturday, but our location next to the basketball courts always allowed us to have some amount of spectators watching and exposing themselves to the new element of Sportsfest 2000. The expert contest on Sunday was a good field of 18 skaters. Many skaters questioned about why the course was so small and spread out, but in the end, it helped to create a great contest. The final scores were often all within one half a point of the next. It came down to who could pull off the most technical tricks and not fall in order to place in the top 10. Philip Hafner, who had previously qualified early in the season, took first place, with John Mojecki finally breaking into the top 10 coming in a strong 2nd and Colin Perhas rounding out the top 3. An intense Salomon Best Trick Contest was held on Saturday morning, and the 1st place Open class winner, Bobby Andrews, walked away with a new Salomon backpack. This was the last event to qualify for Regionals at Woodward on July 28.
