6 Appleton, Wisconsin
Area 51 in Appleton, Wisconsin was the site for the first
Midwest ASA amateur event. Arriving Friday night to a park
filled with rollerbladers, skateboarders, and bikers I knew
this was going to be a fun trip. We had a long drive and
arrived pretty late so the park was about to close, but
we were able to hook up with all our friends for a good
session, just up the street. Danny Gill and Mike French,
two of the judges for this event, proceeded to rip apart
this handicap rail late into the night. The morning came
early, and we arrived at the park to a small group of skaters
waiting to get in. By noon we were ready to kick off the
combined open and 12 and under divisions. Tim Richardson
and Jordan Mooney held their own, skating in the open division,
with Jordan advancing three rounds before getting knocked
out. It was clear after the first round that Steve Lango
was the one to beat, but that wasnąt about to happen. Trent
King and Jason Walker both had clean runs each round to
take second and third respectively. The small expert field
with only 10 men and 2 women, was anything but small on
talent. Chance Conner, who came up with some crazy tricks,
like grinds on top of the wall ride and transferring over
it, took third. Jon Mirakami was super technical and smooth
but was unable to knock Derek French out of first. Derek
went huge and fast, busting tricks like the infamous French
Flip over the launch box. In the women's division, Stacey
Dercks edged out Kelly Lambeth for the win. All in all it
was a fun stop, and a good start to the Midwest region.
