Airborne Amateur Sectional
Event Recap - By Mark Vanderboegh

May 13 Detroit, Michigan
The second stop for the Midwest am circuit was in Detroit at the world famous Airborne skatepark. We showed up to the park on Friday night to meet up with some local boys and judges, Brian Murphy, Nate Vince, and Mark Thomas to hit up some street skating. A good session at the infamous Pontiac Central Rail and we called it a night. Saturday morning came early but the crowd was already gathering as we rolled into Airborne's parking lot. As usually, owner, Mark Farnen always has everything ready to go and under control, registration went smooth and the contest was under way. Up first were the twelve and under skaters. Cale Gains, who set things off by going huge with disaster souls on the Bauer box and big 540's, walked away with first. Brett Blackwell went big over the launch box and had smooth grinds to take second. Chris Humpert pulled in third with a great line. The open division was a battle. Jeff Rouhomaki put together an excellent line with big airs all over the course to take third. In second was Tony Bambrick who spun over everything and in first, Henry Hubbard showed his excellent style and large bag of tricks to walk away with the gold. Next came the expert division and boy was it on. There were even guys talking trash before their runs, saying that they were the ones who were going to win. But, as Mark Kaiser flew across the course and backside stalled the wall on top of the sub-box on the bowl corner that he was not going to be beat. In a display of one of the best lines I have ever witnessed, Mark tore the park apart. The battle for second was close with Dave Thomas taking second, just edging out Jon Murakami who went home with third. On vert it was Christian Stoud showing his huge airs and spins to walk away with the victory, followed by Mark Naimowicz in second. After the award ceremony it was time to hit downtown for a mad street session. All the boys from Canada, Ohio, and Chicago along with the local Detroit crew made this event a weekend to remember.
