Roseville Skating Center Amateur Sectional
Event Recap - By Mark Vanderboegh

June 24 Roseville, MN
The John Rose Oval in Roseville, Minnesota is a mecca for skating of all kinds in Minneapolis. The day of the event was no exception. Not only was there the ASA Am sectional going on, but a inline speed skating race as well as figure skating events going on inside the oval. But of course, the most impressive event was the street competition. With 12 and under skaters throwing out tricks like 720's, clean 540's and a bunch of grinds, you know the shorty rocks were here to represent. Ben Kuban started things out and never let off. His run secured him the top spot, while Jeffrey Ruohamki put together some good lines to take second. Jarred Feight took third with tech grinds and a lot of airs. In the open division it was a real tight race. In the end it was Ryan Marshall putting together an excellent line for third. Mitch Brunette with smooth style was able to edge into second. But, Jason Walker flew through the course busting out tricks on every ramp, and took home first place. Next came the anticipated Expert street finals. With the crowd growing and skaters ready things heated up. Just barely making it into the event Jon Larson showed everyone that he didn't need all the warm-up time by grabbing the third spot. Chris Farmer put together an ill line with clean 540's and grinds like true spin fishbrain on the rail, which was good enough for second. Coming out blazing just like in Appleton, Derek French showed what Minnesota skating is all about - speed and power. Throwing out tricks like the infamous French flip, flat spin 360's and true spin soyale's it was evident that Derek was unstoppable from taking first. Last but not least was the men's vert competition. Joe Charbonneau put together a well rounded run to walk away with first. Shane Arundel pulled out all his grinds to take second, while Drew Avery took third. Even though number of skaters was lower than expected the quality was high, defiantly showing why Minnesota has always been and will be a hot spot for skaters.
