8 Cooper City, Florida
As
I entered the large gates and long driveway leading up to
the Brian Piccalo Skatepark, I knew we were in for another
memorable contest. I rolled in on Friday to meet with the
crew from SFX Skatepark and was impressed by the enormous
layout of the county owned and built Brian Piccalo skatepark.
Since it's opening in August of 1999, it has been a haven
for local skaters to come and hone their skills on the impressive
street course with multiple startboxes, roll-ins, wedges,
funboxes, a huge mini-ramp, complete with spine, and a towering
13' vert ramp. For those that are just starting out, the
beginner's area is a great place with many of the same apparatus,
just scaled down in size. Kids can cruise into the SFX II
pro shop for any needed in-line, skateboard, and most recently
BMX repairs or hit the snack bar, which has great pizza
and only costs a few bucks for a good-sized meal. As I
hung banners on Friday night, the fierce Florida winds started
to whip around the park. The forecast was for only a 10%
chance of rain on Saturday, but I wasn't surprised when
Mother Nature came knocking. Every time I'm in Florida,
no matter where in the state or what time of year, it rains
at least once. I must be cursed. After a raging night of
South Beach Miami parties, I made the long drive to the
park on Saturday morning to prepare for the onslaught of
skaters waiting to register.
