The minutes turned into hours, as the stream of skaters grew increasingly larger. We started the contest with the expert street prelims. A huge field of 25 experts showed up for one of the largest expert fields yet to date. Thirty minutes into the prelims, the dark and dreary clouds and raging winds made their way into the park. We raced through to finish the expert street qualifiers, but to no avail, the light rains slicked the ramps just enough to put us into the first of two lengthy rain delays. When the rain stopped and the sun broke through the clouds, we finished the expert prelims and moved immediately into 12 and under street. With only one heat remaining, the finals in the 12 and under street, the rains returned, with a powerful downpour that held the contest up for over an hour. During the shower, many skaters and parents decided to call it a day and before the rain blew over, the expert street qualifiers agreed to make the prelim results the official results due to the unpredictable weather. At 5:00 PM the course was approved for use. The 12 and under street was completed with Steve Calabrese taking the title for the second consecutive week. The open division was tiny with only 3 competitors left after the rain. Expert vert was also small with Amanda Morris taking first place out of 4 male skaters. Amanda also had a good showing on the street as well, skating her way into the Regionals in both street and vert. For the first event at Brian Piccalo Park, we had a good turnout and great skating. There is always that unpredictable factor of the weather that you must contend with when having a contest at an outdoor park. 10% chance of rain you say Mr. Weatherman, more like 50/50 any day I'm in town.
