X
Games vert kicked off on Friday, August 17, 2001. The top
ten riders advanced to the finals. The vert finals was undoubtedly
the best vert competition any of us had ever seen. Each
skater seemed to outdo the last. Shane Yost's switch 1260
would have won any other competition, but not this year's
X Games. Taïg Khris pulled out his new double backflip
in the finals earning scores in the upper 90's.

Takeshi
Yasutoko also brought skating to new heights finishing in
second place. The women's vert comp was no surprise, with
the ever-consistent Fabiola da Silva, taking the gold and
Japan's Ayumi Kawasaki finishing in second.
The
street comp was exciting, with the top three constantly
changing through the second run of the finals. In the end,
Jaren Grob came from 9th place to win the top prize money
with a huge and intense run followed by Louie Zamora and
Franky Morales. In women's street, Martina Svobodová
won the gold followed by Fallon Heffernan.

The street course was huge and diverse and set the
