Jorge
Gomez is a quiet, reserved type of guy, and in the world
of aggressive skating his name isn't listed among the famous.
Not yet anyway. To get to know Jorge, you first have to
travel into the United State's mid-west, specifically to
the state of Minnesota. Find a skating community in Minnesota
and then ask the question again. Who is Jorge Gomez? Odds
are someone will know who he is and what he does. He may
not have attained fame through his skills on skates, but
that's not to say that they haven't gotten him anywhere.
Jorge has had his time with sponsors, having been locally
sponsored by Rollerblade and the now defunct Scribe Industries.
From the beginning of his life on wheels, Jorge has been
a man with a dream. Like many skaters, Jorge dreamt of starting
a business in the skating industry. The only trick was finding
something that somebody wanted. Through a college project,
Jorge found his answer. For this project, Jorge was asked
to create a web page. He completed the project, but took
it one step farther. He started an online magazine about
aggressive skating. His friends and family thought the magazine
was a passing fancy and that he could never make anything
of himself that way, but Jorge didn't care. He pushed ahead
on his own and out of that negative atmosphere was born
the name Skeptic Industries and a vehicle that could take
him anywhere he wanted. During the four years that Skeptic
Industries has been alive it's grown to be one of the two
most popular and respected online magazines
in the world, by both skaters and industry alike. Jorge
is no longer alone in his quest. He's been able to find
a staff as dedicated to the sport as he is. Still, Skeptic's
popularity is due mainly to Jorge and his talents. You see,
running and working on a magazine has allowed Jorge to develop
what has become his most respected talent yet, his photography.
He is rapidly becoming one of the most sought after photographers
in the sport of aggressive skating. Just check out any recent
issue of Box magazine and you'll find his work peppered
among the pages. Jorge isn't the type of guy who puts in
all this work because he wants the fame or the money; he's
doing it because of a true love for the sport. With one
and a half years of college still to go and an ever-deepening
bag of tricks, the chapter on Jorge's success will most
surely write itself. Keep your eyes open, because you never
know where Jorge and his camera will be, but be sure he'll
be keeping his eye open for you.
