Pro: Josh Petty
By Colby Era |
How
surprised would you be to learn that Josh Petty is ranked
number 61 in the world? Consider how high profile he is as
a skater and it might take a minute to comprehend. Unless
you have ever met Josh Petty, that is. Petty is a lifestyle
skater. That should be evident in his sponsors alone: Second
Regime, USD, Fifty/50 and England - primarily skater owned
companies that Josh has a voice in. So when you take that
perspective you realize that Josh doesn't care what his professional
ranking is and he doesn't care what you think about his ranking.
He is a skater, in all senses of the word. He skates because
he loves to skate, not so he can throw his ranking down at
his sponsors and friends to brag about. Petty is surprisingly
modest about his skating ability. When compared to his peers
he backs off and talks up the likes of Brian Shima and Dustin
Latimer. All amazing skaters in their own right, but Petty
truly deserves his credit. Petty draws photographers and videographers
wherever he goes. Whether it is out on the street in San Diego
or on the course at a skatepark, he draws attention. Kids
want to be like him, but he doesn't want to be like anyone.
That is quite a lifestyle
for a 19-year old kid. He hangs out with Joe Navran down in
the southern end of California. Although Navran is a talented
videographer, talent such as Petty makes his work much easier.
So you may see Petty as a punk and a tough guy but think about
his progress. He is featured in many magazines and videos.
He is recognized by thousands of skaters worldwide and he
has a future outside of skating. He is involved in companies
that will guarantee his future in skating, even if he can
no longer skate. This season, only Josh knows which competitions
he will dominate or even show up to. We can only guess where
this stylish and talented skater will shine. You can be sure
that any video out of Southern California will have a section
on Josh Petty. Will we see him on the ASA Pro Tour? Only time
will tell, because Josh doesn't care about points or rankings.
Petty cares about skating, and he's going to keep skating,
whether you want him to or not. |
