Lake Havasu City, Arizona - March 25, 2000
The 2000 ASA Pro Tour vert competition kicked off with a solid showing from the Japanese Yasutoko brothers. Sixteen year old Eito, 1999 X Games vert champion, edged out his 13 year old brother, Takeshi to clinch the vert title at Lake Havasu City. Reigning world champion, Cesar Mora, rounded out the top three with two solid runs.
The excitement of the day came when Fabiola da Silva qualified in the top ten against the men beating out half the men's field. According to the ASA's new format for women, since Fabiola qualified in the top ten against the men, she maintained her seventh place standing in the men's results and walked off with the seventh place prize purse in addition to taking first place among the women.
Additional strong performance came from Rollerblade's Mike Budnik who's consistent athletic and technical style earned him fifth place. 1999 North American Amateur Champion, Carl Hills, came out to his first pro event with a solid finish in eight place. Once Carl gets used to the pressure of the Pro Circuit and skates with more consistency, he will definitly be a top contender on the Pro Tour.
The vert competition was part of ESPN's B3 which includes the Bicycle Stunt Series and World Cup Skateboarding. The event took place ina beautiful setting on the shore of Lake Havasu surrounded by Arizona's trademark mountains and buttes.
